Indifference to Difference organizes around Alain Badiou’s suggestion that, in the face of increasing claims of identitarian specificity, one might consider the politics and practice of being indifferent to difference. Such a politics would be based on the superabundance of desire and its inability to settle into identity. Madhavi Menon shows that if we turn to another kind of universalism-not one that insists we are all different but one that recognizes we are all similar in our powerlessness to contain desire-then difference no longer becomes the focus of our identity. Instead, we enter the worlds of desire. Following up on ideas of sameness and difference that have animated queer theory, Menon argues that what is most queer about indifference is not that it gives us queerness as an identity but that it is able to change queerness into a resistance of ontology. Firmly committed to the detours of desire, queer universalism evades identity. This polemical book demonstrates that queerness is the condition within which we labor. This article builds on Terence Hawkes' 'jazz' reading of Hamlet to suggest ways in which music can shed light on radical aspects of Shakespeare's theatrical and linguistic craft. Turning specifically to Hindi cinema and the convention of the 'item number', the article considers the latter's translingualism and how it can help us understand the relations between Shakespeare's own polyglot language and the border-crossing nature of desire in Romeo and Juliet.

Telmah thel: The hustle-bustle of a hindi romeo and juliet

This essay attends to the flesh of Thomas Stephens, also known as Tomás Estêvão, also known as Pâtri Guru. Stephens, a dissident Catholic, fled his native England in 1575 and eventually joined the Jesuit mission in Portuguese Goa in India, where he spent the rest of his life. He became a student of Indian languages and wrote an epic 11,000-stanza poem, the Kristapurana, in Marathi. The poem is a story of transformed flesh – not just the flesh of the Jesus commemorated in his poem but also Stephens’ own, altered by his exposure to new cultures and a radically new climate. It is, additionally, a story of the transformative power of non-human flesh: the flesh of the coconut.

Hi Mho Jhi Kudd: Thomas Stephens’s translated Flesh, or, coconuts in Goa

Hosted out of the University of Virginia and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Digital Yoknapatawpha is an international and collaborative project composed of William Faulkner scholars and technologists. Its goal is to create a comprehensive database of all the locations, characters, and events in Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha fictions with the aim of visualizing the data through a series of “deep atlases” and other displays. This paper traces the development cycle of a supplementary narrative structure analysis dashboard that allows users to explore the chronology, narrative status, and date range of all of the texts set in his mythic county. In doing so, it bridges some of the significant gaps between narratological theory and computational methods, opens up a conversation about representing narrative data, and suggests some possible avenues for research with the dashboard. © 2021, Alliance of Digital Humanities Organisations.
