Desiccation stress acts as cause as well as cost of dispersal in Drosophila melanogaster

A core commitment of Bob Hale and Crispin Wright’s neologicism is their invocation of Frege’s Constraint—roughly, the requirement that the core empirical applications for a class of numbers be “built directly into” their formal characterization. According to these neologicists, if legitimate, Frege’s Constraint adjudicates in favor of their preferred foundation—Hume’s Principle—and against alternatives, such as the Dedekind–Peano axioms. In this paper, we consider a recent argument for legitimating Frege’s Constraint due to Hale, according to which the primary empirical application of the naturals is transitive counting, or answering ‘how many’-questions using numerals. We make two claims regarding Hale’s argument. First, it fails to legitimate Frege’s Constraint in virtue of resting on unsupported and highly contentious assumptions. Secondly, even if sound, Hale’s argument would vindicate a version of Frege’s Constraint which fails to adjudicate in favor of Hume’s Principle over alternative characterizations of the naturals. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V.

Hale’s argument from transitive counting

Definite group nouns, such as “the deck of cards,” raise two important kinds of problems. Philosophically, they raise the ancient Problem of the Many: How can one deck be many cards? Linguistically, they threaten paradox: If such expressions singularly refer to groups as set-like entities, then analyses employing such entities threaten to be incoherent, due to Russell's paradox. On the other hand, no paradox is threatened if, per the suggestion of Alex Oliver and Timothy Smiley, “the deck of cards” is a pseudo-singular term, that is, a term which is syntactically singular but semantically plural, exploiting the primitive relation of plural reference. Against this, we argue that pseudo-singularity is linguistically and logically untenable. As such, it will not plausibly solve either kind of problem raised by definite group nouns. © 2021 The Thought Trust and Wiley Periodicals LLC.

The interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) of the (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.) states in neon–helium dimer is studied using highly accurate complex absorbing potential based equation-of-motion coupled cluster (CAP-EOMCC) method. The ICD decay process for the (Formula presented.) state in neon–helium dimer is closed at its equilibrium bond distance. However, the decay channel is open at large bond distance of 6.2 {\AA}. The decay channel for the double ionised (Formula presented.) state is open at 3.46 {\AA}. From our calculations, we have noticed that the decay rate of (Formula presented.) state in neon–helium dimer is four times faster compared to the (Formula presented.) state. We have also investigated how the decay rate of (Formula presented.) state in neon–helium cluster varies in the presence of different helium environment.

Interatomic Coulombic decay in Neon–Helium cluster: a complex absorbing potential based equation-of-motion coupled cluster investigation

The article focuses on two moments in India’s political history, in which out-rightly expressed dissent underlines analytical shifts in the nature and course of the country’s democracy. It asks two questions: First, what does a self-proclaimed, democratic state do with peaceful dissenting artists? The second question follows from this. If indeed the state stigmatizes and suppresses that dissent, what does the artist do? By foregrounding the relationship between the dissent and offence-taking, the article shows the increasingly complex changes in the nature of the democratic state, role of the art market therein, the dynamic patterns of dissent itself, which underline the cyclic outbursts of violence against artists. © 2021 Lokniti, Centre For The Study Of Developing Societies.

The Double Life of Dissent: Art, Politics and the Predicaments of Democracy in India

This paper explores how delegation can be used as a signal to sustain cooperation. I consider a static principal-agent model with two tasks, one resembling a coordination game. If there is asymmetric information about the agent's type, the principal with high private belief can delegate the first task as a signal. This is also supported by the forward induction argument. However, in the laboratory setting, this equilibrium is chosen only sometimes. When the subjects have information about past sessions, there is a significant increase in the use of delegation. This finding sheds light on equilibrium selection in Bayesian games.

Delegation Using Forward Induction

We consider a generalization of perturbed best response dynamics in population games with a continuum of strategies. The previous literature has considered the logit dynamic generated through the Shannon entropy as a deterministic perturbation. We consider a wider class of deterministic perturbations satisfying lower semicontinuity and strong convexity. Apart from the Shannon entropy, Tsallis entropy and Burg entropy are other perturbations that satisfy these conditions. We thereby generate the generalized perturbed best response dynamic with a continuum of strategies. We establish fundamental properties of the dynamic and show convergence in potential games and negative semidefinite games.

Generalized Perturbed Best Response Dynamics with a Continuum of Strategies

We present a novel radar-based system for real-time indoor positioning and detection of objects and human-bodies with low-quality, inexpensive sensors. Using modern deep learning methods, we avoid the use of expensive hardware and computationally-expensive signal processing methods for object detection.We train our model on mini-Doppler maps, collected via software defined radios. Crucially, our system is different from existing RF-based detection systems as it operates in a less crowded frequency range of 433 MHz, allowing us to use inexpensive off-the shelf hardware. Our system, based on the VGG-16 model, reports high-accuracy results on: (1) classification of different objects/materials (plastic, glass, metal); (2) detection and classification of multiple visually and materially similar objects and the human-body; and (3) Simple object detection at different distances between the transmitter Tx and the receiver Rx.WALDO, using low frequency radio waves, is able to handle occlusions and bad lighting environments. Our results demonstrate that Deep Learning methods can be combined with inexpensive, low-frequency radars to achieve high accuracy in real-time on various useful tasks. © 2021 IEEE.

WALDO Finds You using Machine Learning: Wireless Adaptive Location and Detection of Objects

Understanding how immunological memory lasts a lifetime requires quantifying changes in the number of memory cells as well as how their division and death rates change over time. We address these questions by using a statistically powerful mixed-effects differential equations framework to analyze data from two human studies that follow CD8 T cell responses to the yellow fever vaccine (YFV-17D). Models were first fit to the frequency of YFV-specific memory CD8 T cells and deuterium enrichment in those cells 42 days to 1 year post-vaccination. A different dataset, on the loss of YFV-specific CD8 T cells over three decades, was used to assess out of sample predictions of our models. The commonly used exponential and bi-exponential decline models performed relatively poorly. Models with the cell loss following a power law (exactly or approximately) were most predictive. Notably, using only the first year of data, these models accurately predicted T cell frequencies up to 30 years post-vaccination. Our analyses suggest that division rates of these cells drop and plateau at a low level (0.1% per day, ∼ double the estimated values for naive T cells) within one year following vaccination, whereas death rates continue to decline for much longer. Our results show that power laws can be predictive for T cell memory, a finding that may be useful for vaccine evaluation and epidemiological modeling. Moreover, since power laws asymptotically decline more slowly than any exponential decline, our results help explain the longevity of immune memory phenomenologically.

Dynamics and turnover of memory CD8 T cell responses following yellow fever vaccination

Spontaneous whole-genome duplication, or autodiploidization, is a common route to adaptation in experimental evolution of haploid budding yeast populations. The rate at which autodiploids fix in these populations appears to vary across strain backgrounds, but the genetic basis of these differences remains poorly characterized. Here, we show that the frequency of autodiploidization differs dramatically between two closely related laboratory strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, BY4741 and W303. To investigate the genetic basis of this difference, we crossed these strains to generate hundreds of unique F1 segregants and tested the tendency of each segregant to autodiplodize across hundreds of generations of laboratory evolution. We find that variants in the SSD1 gene are the primary genetic determinant of differences in autodiploidization. We then used multiple laboratory and wild strains of S. cerevisiae to show that clonal populations of strains with a functional copy of SSD1 autodiploidize more frequently in evolution experiments, while knocking out this gene or replacing it with the W303 allele reduces autodiploidization propensity across all genetic backgrounds tested. These results suggest a potential strategy for modifying rates of spontaneous whole-genome duplications in laboratory evolution experiments in haploid budding yeast. They may also have relevance to other settings in which eukaryotic genome stability plays an important role, such as biomanufacturing and the treatment of pathogenic fungal diseases and cancers.
