In this article, we discuss the possibility of economics as a discipline emulating the success of hard sciences. In our view, a fundamental obstacle arises from the fact that economics does not have (m)any stable and robust laws governing economic systems that hold true irrespective of the source of data. One possible but untested way to introduce some of the evolving features of large scale economic systems, e.g. out-of-equilibrium dynamics and finite rationality, is evolutionary game theory.

Modern applications exercise main memory systems in different ways. A lot of scale-out, in-memory applications exploit a number of desirable properties provided by DRAM such as high capacity, low latency and high bandwidth. Although DRAM technology continues to scale aggressively, new resistive memory technologies are on the horizon, promising scalability, density and non-volatility. However, they still suffer from longer, asymmetric read-write latencies and have lower endurance as compared to DRAM. Considering these factors, scale-out, distributed applications will benefit greatly from main memory architectures that provide the non-volatility of new memory technologies, but still have DRAM-like latencies. To that end, we introduce DRAM-Persist - a novel mechanism to make main memory persistent and complement existing high speed storage, specifically geared for scale-out systems.

DRAMPersist: Making DRAM systems persistent

A number of recent accounts for vague terms postulate a kind of context-sensitivity, one that kicks in after the usual ‘external’ contextual factors like comparison class are established and held fixed. In a recent paper, ‘Vagueness without Context Change’(Mind 116 (2007): 275–92), Rosanna Keefe criticizes all such accounts. The arguments are variations on considerations that have been brought against context-sensitive accounts of knowledge, predicates of personal taste, epistemic modals, and the like. The issues are well known and there are variety of options available in reply. More important, the arguments rely on an overly narrow conception of context-sensitivity, suggesting that one size fits all. If Keefe’s arguments were cogent, they would tell against the context-sensitivity of just about any expression, beyond the typical indexicals, including the variation of vague terms with comparison class. However, the criticisms raised by Keefe do highlight certain questions that must be answered by an advocate of a context-sensitive account of vagueness, essentially the same sorts of questions that must be answered by a contextualist or relativist about knowledge, epistemic modals, predicates of personal taste, etc. The main purpose of this paper is to use replies to the relevant objections raised by Keefe as a springboard for further articulation of the underlying view of vagueness. © 2015 Taylor & Francis.

We show completeness results for secret sharing schemes realizing mNP access structures. We begin by proposing a new, Euclidean-type, division technique for access structures. Using this new technique we obtain several results in characterizing access structures for efficient (unconditionally secure) secret sharing schemes: – We show a useful transformation that achieves efficient schemes for complex access structures using schemes realizing simple access structures. – We show that, assuming every access structure in P ∩ mono admits efficient secret sharing, the existence of an efficient secret sharing for an access structure in mNP that is also complete for mNP under Karp/Levin monotone-reductions implies secret sharing schemes for all of mNP. – We finally improve upon the above completeness result by obtaining the same under ordinary Karp/Levin reductions.

Secret sharing for mNP: Completeness results

Recently, adoption of Flash based devices has become increasingly common in all forms of computing devices. Flash devices have started to become more economically viable for large storage installations like datacenters, where metrics like Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) are of paramount importance. Flash devices suffer from write amplification (WA), which, if unaccounted, can substantially increase the TCO of a storage system. In this paper, we develop a TCO model for Flash storage devices and then plug a Write Amplification (WA) model of NVMe SSDs we build based on empirical data into this TCO model. Our new WA model accounts for workload characteristics like write rate and percentage of sequential writes. Furthermore, using both the TCO and WA models as the optimization criterion, we design new Flash resource management schemes (minTCO) to guide datacenter managers to make workload allocation decisions under the consideration of TCO for SSDs. Experimental results show that minTCO can reduce the TCO and keep relatively high throughput and space utilization of the entire datacenter storage.

A fresh perspective on total cost of ownership models for flash storage in datacenters

Odors provide information regarding the chemical properties of potential environment hazards. Some of this information may be disgust-related (e.g., organic decay), whereas other information may be fear-related (e.g., smoke). Many studies have focused on how disgust and fear, as prototypical avoidant emotions, facilitate the detection of possible threats, but these studies have typically confined to the visual modality. Here, we examine how disgust and fear influence olfactory detection at a particular level—the level at which a subliminal olfactory stimulus crosses into conscious perception, also known as a detection threshold. Here, using psychophysical methods that allow us to test perceptual capabilities directly, we show that one way that disgust (Experiments 1–3) and fear (Experiment 3) facilitate detection is by lowering the amount of physical input that is needed to trigger a conscious experience of that input. This effect is particularly strong among individuals with high disgust sensitivity (Experiments 2–3). Our research suggests that a fundamental way in which avoidant emotions foster threat detection is through lowering perceptual thresholds.

Disgust and fear lower olfactory threshold

Being female and a politician in the United States represents a combination of identities that remains replete with controversy and lack of clarity, perhaps not surprisingly for a nation in which women were granted the right to vote less than one hundred years ago, in 1920, with the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The case of Alaska, which became the 49th of the 50 U.S. states in 1959, is especially relevant to discussions of women in politics, as it has been closely associated with Republican politics since at least statehood, and recently attracted widespread attention with the nomination of then Alaska governor Sarah Palin as the Republican Party nominee for vice president in the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

The expansion of microfinance has triggered concerns of rising indebtedness and higher default and interest rates. Using a screening model, we show that even if interest and default rates increase due to expansion, borrower welfare may improve. This is because: (i) all borrowers previously denied credit can obtain loans and (ii) screening costs for pre-existing borrowers go down. Hence, policies that seek to regulate interest and screening levels can be counterproductive.
