Cadmium (Cd2+), a heavy metal ion used in numerous industries, has toxic adverse effects on the environment; it is crucial to develop a quick and reliable method for Cd2+ determination. Fluorescent biomass-derived carbon quantum dots (CD) with rich carboxyl groups on the surface were synthesized using water amaranth leaves by hydrothermal method with a 12.1% quantum yield. The surface of CD was further modified with 1-pyrene carboxaldehyde (PC) to synthesize pyrene carboxaldehyde-carbon quantum dots (PC-CD). This study developed a fluorescent ratiometric nanosensor using a covalently functionalized CD with pyrene derivative and demonstrates highly selective identification capability towards Cd2+ over competing metal ions. The Nano sensor has significant selectivity towards Cd2+ in an excellent linear range of 0-70 μM with a detection limit as low as 15 nM and demonstrates excellent water solubility and biocompatibility. Transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) were used to identify the surface functionalization of PC-CD. Finally, the developed ratiometric sensor was used for detecting Cd2+ metal ions from various water effluents. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.

A ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on dual-emissive carbon dot for the selective detection of Cd2+

A facile and sustainable electrochemical synthetic strategy for phenyl <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/benzimidazole">benzimidazoles</a> has been developed using a ferrocene-based <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/electrocatalyst">electrocatalyst</a> anchored on Toray carbon paper (TCP) coated with conducting polymeric film. The developed electrode was used for the electrochemical dehydrogenative <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/cyclization-reaction">cyclization reaction</a> of o-phenylene <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/diamine">diamine</a> and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/benzaldehyde">benzaldehyde</a> using lithium perchlorate/acetonitrile as electrolyte. The surface characteristic properties of the developed electrode were characterized by <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/field-emission-scanning-electron-microscopy">FESEM</a>, Optical profilometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electron transfer mechanism of the anchored ferrocene-based electrocatalyst was thoroughly studied. To determine the efficacy of the catalyst, the electron <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/transfer-coefficient">transfer coefficient</a> (0.5) and apparent rate constant 41.4&nbsp;s−1 were determined. The <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/cyclic-voltammetry">cyclic voltammetry</a> studies reveal that the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/electrochemical-oxidation">electrochemical oxidation</a> peak for the synthesis of benzimidazole occurs at 0.48&nbsp;V. The formation of the product was confirmed by <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemical-engineering/gas-chromatography">Gas chromatography</a> and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. A comparison chart is presented for the green metrics and sustainability of the present strategy with other electrochemical approach.

Anchored ferrocene based heterogeneous electrocatalyst for the synthesis of benzimidazoles

The unbridled release of harmful endocrine disruptors (EDs) into the environment is deteriorating human and animal health. A facile and efficacious biosensor was developed by immobilizing laccase over electropolymerized poly anthranilic acid on a carbon fiber paper (CFP) electrode, Lac/PAA/CFP for the detection of p-nonylphenol (PNP). PNP is a persistent phenolic endocrine disruptor and a harmful eco-toxic pollutant. Physico-chemical and electrochemical characterization of the fabricated electrode was carried out to study the modification of the Lac/PAA/CFP electrode. Cyclic voltammetric studies divulged that the prepared sensor has catalytic activity approximately twice greater than that of the bare CFP electrode. The influence of pH and scan rate was scrutinized for the modified electrode. Under optimized conditions differential pulse voltammetric studies were used for the quantification and the results revealed that the biosensor has a low limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.74&nbsp;nM and 5&nbsp;Nm, respectively with a broad linear dynamic range of 5–250&nbsp;nM. In the presence of interferants, the developed biosensor exhibited good selectivity toward the electrochemical detection of PNP. Molecular docking studies carried out revealed the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/chemistry/hydrogen-bonding">hydrogen bonding</a> interaction of the Asn264 residue of laccase Trametes versicolor. Further, the fabricated biosensor was accessed for its practicality in real samples collected from tap water and lake water.
