Despite the notable progress in the stabilization of main group radicals by NHCs and cAACs, no germanium radicals have been isolated so far due to synthetic challenges. Stabilization of neutral [:E I R] (E = Si, Ge) radicals is an uphill task, as these reactive transient species are highly susceptible to dimerization. Herein, we report the synthesis of acyclic neutral germanium(I) radicals Cy-cAAC:GeN(SiMe 3 )Dip (1) and Me-cAAC:GeN(SiPh 3 )Mes (2) obtained by the reduction of [Ar(SiR 3 )NGeCl 3 ] with KC 8 in the presence of cAAC. Compounds 1 and 2 are well characterized by single crystal X-ray structural analysis, cyclic voltammetry and EPR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the structure and bonding of compounds 1 and 2 have been investigated by theoretical methods.

Isolation of Transient Acyclic Germanium(I) Radicals Stabilized by Cyclic Alkyl(amino) Carbenes

We show that dynamic quantum phase transitions (DQPT) in many situations involve renormalization group (RG) fixed points that are unphysical in the context of thermal phase transitions. In such cases, boundary conditions are shown to become relevant to the extent of even completely suppressing the bulk transitions. We establish these by performing an exact RG analysis of the quantum Ising model on scale-invariant lattices of different dimensions, and by analyzing the zeros of the Loschmidt amplitude. Further corroboration of boundaries affecting the bulk transition comes from the three-state quantum Potts chain, for which we also show that the DQPT corresponds to a pair of period-2 fixed points. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Boundaries and Unphysical Fixed Points in Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions

Mechanotransduction from the extracellular matrix into the cell is primarily supervised by a transmembrane receptor, integrin, and a cytosolic protein, talin. Integrin binds ligands on the extracellular side, whereas talin couples integrin receptors to the actin cytoskeleton and later acts as a "force buffer". Talin and integrin together form a mechanosensitive signaling hub that regulates crucial cellular processes and pathways, including cell signaling and formation of focal adhesion complexes, which help cells to sense their mechano-environment and transduce the signal accordingly. Although both proteins function in tandem, most literature focuses on them individually. Here, we provide a focused review of the talin-integrin mechano-interactome network in light of its role in the process of mechanotransduction and its connection to diseases. While working under force, these proteins drive numerous biomolecular interactions and form adhesion complexes, which in turn control many physiological processes such as cell migration; thus, they are invariably associated with several diseases from leukocyte adhesion deficiency to cancer. Gaining insights into their role in the occurrence of these pathological disorders might lead us to establish treatment methods and therapeutic techniques. © 2019 American Chemical Society.

Force-Directed "mechanointeractome" of Talin-Integrin

Growing household energy demand, particularly in developing countries starting from a low base of consumption, is an important driver of current and future greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, our understanding of transitioning residential energy demand in developing country contexts is limited. This paper discusses changing energy service demands in urban low-income households in India, an emerging economy where the largest future growth in energy demand globally is projected to occur, and where 12 million new low-income homes for the urban poor are to be built by the government between 2015 and 2022. Based on mixed quantitative and qualitative methods comprising of surveys, interviews and focus group discussions, we analyze two inter-related questions: how does the demand for energy services change as the ability of low-income households to consume increases; and how do energy related behaviors influence household electricity consumption? We analyze the data collected to rank households according to their ability to consume and to identify the types of, and progression in, energy services acquired. The appliances and associated services pursued are lights, fans, televisions, and refrigerators, with varied energy efficiencies. Analogously, we quantify the influence of behavior in determining electricity consumption, and show that the inclusion of socio-demographic and behavioral factors explain a significant proportion (51%) of the variance in household electricity consumption, along with the role of material factors such as building physical characteristics and appliance stocks. We complement the statistical analysis with qualitative fieldwork and discuss changing energy related behaviors as the ability of households to consume increases. We conclude with recommendations for climate actions that are compatible with development in the growing low-income housing stock. © 2019 The Author(s). Published by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Energy demand transitions and climate mitigation in low-income urban households in India

Cells adhere to substrates through mechanosensitive focal adhesion complexes. Measurements that probe how cells detach from substrates when they experience an applied force connect molecular-scale aspects of cell adhesion with the biophysical properties of adherent cells. Such forces can be applied through shear devices that flow fluid in a controlled manner across cells. The signaling pathways associated with focal adhesions, in particular those that involve integrins and receptor tyrosine kinases, are complex, receiving mechano-chemical feedback from the sensing of substrate stiffness as well as of external forces. This article reviews the signaling processes involved in mechanosensing and mechanotransduction during cell-substrate interactions, describing the role such signaling plays in cancer metastasis. We examine some recent progress in quantifying the strength of these interactions, describing a novel fluid shear device that allows for the visualization of the cell and its sub-cellular structures under a shear flow. We also summarize related results from a biophysical model for cellular de-adhesion induced by applied forces. Quantifying cell-substrate adhesions under shear should aid in the development of mechano-diagnostic techniques for diseases in which cell-adhesion is mis-regulated, such as cancers. © Copyright © 2019 Paddillaya, Mishra, Kondaiah, Pullarkat, Menon and Gundiah.

Biophysics of Cell-Substrate Interactions Under Shear

Snapshots of colloidal particles moving on disordered two-dimensional substrates can be used to extract equal-time many-body correlations in their positions. To understand the systematics of these correlations, we perform Monte Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional model fluid placed in a quenched disordered background. We use configurations generated from these simulations to compute translational and orientational two-point correlations at equal time, concentrating on correlations in local orientational order as a function of density and disorder strength. We calculate both the disorder averaged version of conventional two-point correlation functions for orientational order, as well as the disorder averaged version of a novel correlation function of time-averaged disorder-induced inhomogeneities in local orientation analogous to the Edwards-Anderson correlation function in spin systems. We demonstrate that these correlations can exhibit interesting nonmonotonic behavior in proximity to the underlying fluid-solid transition and suggest that this prediction should be experimentally accessible. © 2019 Author(s).

We analyze the formation of partnerships in social networks. Players need favors at random times and ask their neighbors in the network to form exclusive long-term partnerships that guarantee reciprocal favor exchange. Refusing to provide a favor results in the automatic removal of the underlying link. Players agree to provide the first favor in a partnership only if they otherwise face the risk of eventual isolation. In equilibrium, players essential for realizing every maximum matching can avoid this risk and enjoy higher payoffs than inessential players. Although the search for partners is decentralized and reflects local partnership opportunities, the strength of essential players drives efficient partnership formation in every network. Efficient partnership formation in networks

The highly conserved proteins of the 14-3-3 family are universal adaptors known to regulate an enormous range of cellular processes in eukaryotes. However, their biological functions remain largely uncharacterized in pathogenic protists comprising of several 14-3-3 protein isoforms. In this study, we report the role of 14-3-3 in coordinating cytoskeletal dynamics during phagocytosis in a professional phagocytic protist Entamoeba histolytica, the etiological agent of human amebiasis. There are three isoforms of 14-3-3 protein in amoeba and here we have investigated Eh14-3-3 Protein 3 (EhP3). Live and fixed cell imaging studies revealed the presence of this protein throughout the parasite phagocytosis process, with high rate of accumulation at the phagocytic cups and closed phagosomes. Conditional suppression of EhP3 expression caused significant defects in phagocytosis accompanied by extensive diminution of F-actin at the site of cup formation. Downregulated cells also exhibited defective recruitment of an F-actin stabilizing protein, EhCoactosin at the phagocytic cups. In addition, mass spectrometry based analysis further revealed a large group of EhP3-associated proteins, many of these proteins are known to regulate cytoskeletal architecture in E histolytica. The dynamics of these proteins may also be controlled by EhP3. Taken together, our findings strongly suggest that EhP3 is a novel and a key regulatory element of actin dynamics and phagocytosis in E. histolytica. © 2019 Agarwal et al.
